First Marriage

Benjamin’s first wife was Lutherina “Ruth” Walker, born about 1826 in Tennessee, daughter of William Houston Walker Sr. and Mary Beck. No marriage record has been located. The family appears in Bradley County in the 1850 census.1 Ruth does not appear in the household at the 1860 census, taken on July 27, and is presumed to have died before that date.2 The death certificates of her sons Allen (1920) and William Houston (1928) support her identification as their mother.7 8
